Evaluate the implications for the maritime component of the likely Essay

Evaluate the implications for the maritime component of the likely characteristics of future conflict - Essay Example The Cold War was precipitated by the bipolarity that prevailed during the rivalry of the United States and the Soviet Union for influence and power. In studying the causes for these major conflicts, one will see their marked differences. Chester Crocker, Fen Osler Hampson and Pamela Aall have argued that any theories about war must reject that it is constant or at least must be modified to include many variables that explain observed variation.1 In talking about future war, it is, hence, difficult to predict. But history, after numerous wars, and the current military, political and economic trends have equipped us with enough knowledge to understand what will characterize the future conflicts and how they will affect the their components today onwards. The significance of this kind of analysis and discourse is that, as we sufficiently understand the political, economic and social circumstances that lie behind the decisions for violent actions, we are in a better position not just to be ready but also to utilize the knowledge for use in conflict prevention. More importantly, it underscores the reality that war remains primarily a tool of politics in the hands of willful leaders. For this paper, I will explore several variables of future conflict that is affecting and will affect the maritime forces including: the actors in conflict both state and non-state entities; the nature of future war; inter-state warfare; the changing nature of future threat; the changing roles and missions that future conflict may require of maritime forces; the effect of the new roles and responsibilities that are required by future conflict on maritime forces; and, how the asymmetric warfare looks like at sea. The numerous wars that the world has seen have different characteristics in regard to scale, period, casualties, among other characteristics. It varies in form (interstate, intrastate), regional concentration, frequency, intensity, and other

Capacity Planning Essay Example for Free

Capacity Planning Essay Computer capacity planning and its impact on the performance of the individuals is an important research topic in the current day scenario . Living in a competitive world makes it compulsory for everyone ( Individuals , firms etc . ) to deliver their best in the shortest period of time by optimally utilizing their resources . The above mentioned scenario is in direct proportion to an increase in the performance of the individual or the firm . This paper presents a report on how computer capacity planning can have a ositive impact on the performance of an institution like TUI , which uses technology as its medium of imparting knowledge to students coming from a variety of background, Nationality, ethnic race etc. It studies how capacity planning can enhance the existing functional efficiency of the institution and the performance of the educating staff as well as the students . TUI is an organization which acts as a platform for teachers lecturers and students from a wide range of colleges institutions and nationality. It concerns itself with an infinite number of issues related with the colleges and institutions, their management , their programmes , plans , achievements , their student quality etc . The list is non-exhaustive. For an institution like this, which caters to such a wide variety of educational demands and issues , the need for computer capacity evaluation is a necessity , especially when the medium used is e-learning . Computer capacity planning will help TUI spread its reach to all the student population of the world and all others who can benefit from the services provided by the institution . It will help them to effectively implement their plans while saving on cost at the same time . Computer Capacity planning is an important aspect of computer networking; proper Planning ensures a healthy network that can grow to meet future needs of the institution. Computer capacity planning will include capacity management and capacity control . Capacity management will ensure an increase in the total system output and responsiveness , whereas , capacity control will ensure non-wastage of the additional energy gained with capacity management . It will avoid delays in any of the university’s future planning , use of new applications , new methods of teaching etc . It will also help the university officials to forecast the future situations which the institutions would be likely to face . Capacity evaluation is basically an act of evaluating the available resources of the concerned institution and the most optimal way of utilizing it . Capacity planning needs to be a part of the infrastructure of the institution and act as a medium of benefit for the professors and the students . The system provides with an intelligent interface to communicate. Capacity planning will add volumes to the existing efficiency of the technical planning running the institute . It will act as a facilitator , analyst , decision-maker and an important performer of the institution . Looking at it from the administrative point of view it helps them to organize their work better and also catalogue it in a more organized format . The quicker the computer applications works the faster the work can be done in terms of the number of persons reached per minute . The computer capacity evaluation becomes more relevant in the words of TUI University President Professor Yoram Neumann, Ph. D. â€Å"TUI is one of the countrys (worlds) leading Internet Universities. † Thus making it necessary for the institution to provide its members with high quality computer services . Computer capacity evaluation will help TUI achieve its main goal of providing e-learning opportunity to all their students on a wide scale , at all levels of study . It will act like a performance enhancer for the administration in reference to the services provided by them thus enabling them to deliver their best to the students in a shorter period of time . It will help them to avoid wastage of the existing resources which otherwise could be reached-out to a million students , help them in meeting their plans within time instead of constantly changing their way of doing their work . A methodical approach can be used by the administration to do their work . Over a period of time the process would prove to be significantly productive and also constantly improving the ways of doing things . Planning will also provide security to the whole setup thus acting as an initiative for an enhanced performance . This will also help the administrators to work more creatively , use new methods of teaching students and evaluating their performance . As a result with an increase in the performance of the administrator the performance of the students will also improve positively . From the students point of view since education will be imparted in an e-learning format the quality demanded by them will be very high . Maintaining a high bandwidth will enable the students to save their time , which can be more fruitfully utilized . High bandwidth will also enable the university to register a larger number of student Enrollment both nationally and internationally . Capacity evaluation will permit the students to increase their performance on any given activity drastically . Thus any activity running solely on any kind of technology must have that technology operating at its best . Computer capacity planning if used in TUI will act as a major contributor to the enhanced performances of both the university officials and the students as well and an increased performance will lead to a more contributive output which over a period of time can result in positive international impact considering TUI’s international reach .

An Overview of Health Promotion Programs

An Overview of Health Promotion Programs ASSIGNMENT: What are health prevention programs? What role do employers play with health prevention programs? Research health prevention programs and the various companies that offers them. Which company’s program do you prefer? Why? In November 2006, I began my journey to lose weight and become a healthy individual. When I was 203 pounds, I knew I needed to lose weight because I was currently vulnerable of succumbing to the many health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, joint problems and even exercise induced asthma. During my quest to lose 63 pounds, I began a health prevention program that overtime would eliminate or greatly reduce my chances of ever contracting a lifestyle related illness. I didn’t know it at the time, but many businesses today work to provide the same lifestyle I was seeking to achieve and still look to obtain today. If businesses look to provide health prevention programs, it would be a great idea to learn more about what health prevention programs entail. Health prevention programs are programs that are created to help the public fight off illnesses and overcome diseases. Health prevention programs stave off chronic diseases such as heart disease, various cancers, and lower respiratory infections such as COPD and asthma. Most of these can be prevented by stopping high-risk behavior such as smoking and overeating. The reason why health prevention programs are so effective is because, like the name says, these are programs that prevent illnesses as mild as obesity (which is in no way mild) and as severe as heart attacks and strokes (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2014). Chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes are responsible for at least seven and as much as 10 deaths a year in the United States. Furthermore, treatment for the preventable yet chronic ailments costs over 75% of the over $2.5 trillion that is spent annually on health care costs. Finally, yet not exhaustively, obesity is responsible for a great deal of health costs. Because disease risks often related to various social activities like tobacco use, physical inactivity, poor diet, and alcohol abuse, this often results in unnecessary reasons for poor health and even more unnecessary reasons for chronic disease (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2014). Businesses are interested in health prevention because of the indirect costs businesses incur for poor health in the work place such as absenteeism, physical disability, and reduced employee work output. These cause are further exacerbated by increased health insurance costs. These reductions in production due to preventable health issues have been known to cost employers in the United States as much as $1,685 per individual employee per year. Another ways to view it is that it costs employers $225.8 billion a year (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2014). This means there is a necessity to implement and then expand an evidence-based health prevention that will provide the opportunity to improve the health but also control health care spending in the United States. Health prevention programs have proven effective. Workplace health programs have influenced social norms; establish new health policies, promote healthy lifestyles, and generate health screenings like immunizations, and reduce on-the-job exposure to hazards that can cause injury and diseases. When evidence based health prevention programs are effectively executed, these programs can generate around a $3 profit for every dollar spent (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2014). Health prevention programs have also benefited programs that focus on aging. Measures taking by the Administration on Aging is has implemented programs that benefit older adults manage and improve their health. Older Americans often suffer on a daily basis with chronic diseases, illnesses and injuries such as heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes. Health prevention programs are key in teaching older adults healthy behaviors and lifestyles. One of the best ways health prevention programs benefit older adults is through the use of community based wellness programs. These health prevention programs have been proven track record of increasing self-sufficiency and independence among older adults while decreasing trips to health care providers so that older adults are able to care and manage their health on their own for longer periods of time (HHS Administration on Aging, 2014). As alluded to earlier, businesses have benefited and have a heightened role in generating health prevention programs. First of all, companies can create three to five health intervention programs that often involve a combination of new programs, policies, and even environmental programs that highlight and celebrate nutrition and physical activity, while discouraging alcohol abuse, drug use and tobacco use in the workplace. One example of these programs include creating an inner and outer workplace environment that is completely tobacco-free while also subsidizing counseling to quit smoking and excess drug and alcohol issues. Another programs brings a local farmer’s market into the workplace. The farmer’s market not only provides the produce but also offers nutritional education and counseling, menu creations based on healthy, whole foods, non-junk foods in the workplace cafeteria and vending machines, counseling for weight loss and weight maintenance; and physical activ ity /lifestyle counseling, such as walking and running clubs. A successful workplace health prevention program will result in the full support and commitment of health prevention leadership and employees that are fully entrenched in all core health prevention programs that are created in a healthy lifestyle culture within the worksite (Health Promotion Programs, 2014). There are quite a few businesses that have excellent health prevention programs. First of all, SAS an international software company located in North Carolina, provides for its employees a wellness program that is built around its recreation and fitness center. This recreation and fitness center is open not only to SAS employees but also the employee family members and those who retire from SAS. Furthermore, SAS provides health checks, smoking cessation programs and incentives for accomplishing fitness goals. Finally though not exhaustively, the recreations and fitness center also provides preventative services as well as primary health care services to the SAS employees and their dependents (EHS Today, 2014). Another company that excels in generating health prevention programs is actually a university. The University of Alaska provides their employees an opportunity to complete a wellness profile so that they can uncover any hidden health concerns and then direct the employee to the right department in the university’s on-site health and wellness services. The university’s employees can then take part in applicable health screenings, health and fitness events, health and wellness coaching, and online health tracking. Employees who take part in the university’s health prevention programs are often reward for participating in the program (EHS Today, 2014). A third company that excels in providing a health prevention program is the Hamilton Utilities Corporation. This company health prevention program has the goal of providing a healthy workplace for all of their employees. The health prevention program encourages their employees to go beyond popping pills and submitting to surgeries for health maintenance but to look to maintain health from a holistic point of view. This involves measures such as a supportive work environment, workers safety, and employee empowerment programs. The company’s wellness team then evaluates and implements their wellness programs. Then the company’s management team provides support for the company’s wellness efforts through employee training, employee participation incentives, and implementing vending machines that provide healthy food choices in the workplace (EHS Today, 2014). Of all the programs, I am most impressed with the health prevention program that is found at SAS. Frist of all, I like how they provide a smoke free environment outside as well as inside. I remember one company I worked at where I needed to drop off an overnight package in a FedEx drop box that was right next to a prime smokers spot. I always had to hold my breath at that spot because that second-hand cigarette smoke was indeed quite intense. Furthermore, I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of SAS to provide a fitness center that is accessible not only to the employees but also to the employees family and it’s available to the employees long after they retire. Finally, though certainly not exhaustively, I appreciate how SAS rewards employees for accomplishing fitness goals really touches my heart. I would love to work at a company that rewards a person for reaching his or her goal weight, completing a 10K and even anniversaries for each year an employee’s goal weight is maintained. I would be honored to work at such a company. Conclusion After completing this assignment, I’m even more encouraged to lose the thirty pounds I’ve regained. I want to live a long and healthy life and I can’t do that with a thirty pound excess weighing down my heart and challenging my breathing and joints. Furthermore, even with health insurance, managing the hazards of excess weight is expensive. I would rather spend money on tap dance classes and running 10Ks than on prescriptions for managing high blood pressure. Finally, though certainly not exhaustively, I have a six-year-old nephew that I want to watch grow up, graduate from college and get married. I’ve always said I want to dance at his wedding; and I can’t do that as well if dancing will cause breathing problems due to excess weight. I’m so thankful for companies that provide health prevention programs because they encourage me to maintain my own healthy lifestyle. References Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Home Schooling is Seldom Done at Home! :: Personal Narrative Essay Example

My Home Schooling is Seldom Done at Home! I am writing this essay in the hope of answering two questions that you might have for anyone who studies at home: why do I homeschool and how do I do it? Â   After graduating from the Antioch School, a private alternative school connected with Antioch College, I decided to spend my seventh grade year at Ridgewood, a private prep school. This was instead of going on the the Yellow Springs Junior High like most of my friends. I chose Ridgewood primarily for one reason: the students. They were happy, lively, accepting, and seemed very interested in their work. Â   Although I received very good grades, and did very well academically at Ridgewood, I found that my learning was very controlled and prescribed. At the Antioch School I had always been encouraged to take charge of my own learning. But at Ridgewood everyone was expected to move along with everyone else, plodding at a universal pace that was too fast for some and infinitely too slow for others. It was expected that we would accommodate our learning for the good of the class; no one was allowed to move out of the mundane rhythm and learn for themselves. Our minds were not our property, they belonged to a communal brain bank and no one could make a withdrawal without their other classmates taking out the exact same amount. For example, although grammar had always been very easy for me, I was still often expected to complete four grammar assignments per night along with everyone else in the class, whether or not I needed them. I often found I did not have the time for my own interests or m y own learning. Â   I left Ridgewood with a firm idea in my head: I was not going back the next year; I was going to homeschool. My parents and I had discussed this at length during the second half of my seventh grade year. There was so much I wanted to do, so many things I wanted to accomplish that I knew would not be possible if I remained at Ridgewood. So, that last day, after saying farewell to my friends and telling them I would not be returning the next year, I finally started to live my life. Â   That first year of homeschool was filled with such an incredible sense of elation.

Starting a Historical Fiction Series †A Reedsy Success Story

Starting a Historical Fiction Series – A Reedsy Success Story Starting a Historical Fiction Series – A Reedsy Success Story Author R.P. Wollbaum is another example of the tremendous opportunity that indie-publishing represents for writers. He self-published his first book in 2015 and is now working on book 5 of his Bears and Eagles series. He has found his editor and cover designer through Reedsy and has been working with them ever since. His story is quite nice, so we thought we'd let him share it on our blog.I have always been interested in history. As a young lad, I used to listen to the old-timers talk about the old country. There were still a few around that had been born in what they called Russia, now called Ukraine, and they talked about life there. They also talked about life in their new home, Canada and how there had been literally nothing but open sky and prairie when they had arrived. They even told stories they had heard from  their grandfather about life in the ‘Old Country’, and the struggles they faced to make a life for themselves.I had always had an interest in writing. B ut writing things in longhand - my handwriting is terrible- then transcribing them by typewriter was a pain and any hope of finding someone to publish your work was almost impossible. So it was just an infrequent hobby for me.Then life in Canada changed and our young men and women were once again losing their lives in war. This time in Afghanistan and a young man serving as a member of the King’s Own Calgary Regiment lost his life. Most of us in Canada know of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Battalion. Albertans know about the Lord Strathcona Horse (an armored brigade), and Calgarians know about the Calgary Highlanders. They are all famous Canadian regiments. But the King’s Own Calgary Regiment? Who were they?So I researched this little-known cavalry brigade and thought to myself, what led this young man from a country not known for its military history, to join a reserve reconnaissance battalion? A plotline developed and I worked backwa rd in time to come to a starting point in the late nineteenth century when things were much like they are today, but I definitely still needed to do some worldbuilding. Huge Imperial Empires were dueling over land and prestige. Islamic fundamentalists were fighting to expand their territories and Christians were fighting them.I placed a young educated man, Russian born to German emigrants and his younger brother in a Cossack battalion along with other younger sons of other German families and progressed from there. Each book of the Bears and Eagles series follows the next generation of this family and I place them in times and events that did occur, but perhaps not exactly how or when. The explosion of indie-produced writers made the decision to publish easy, and I made a choice early on to obtain professional help for editing and book cover design. I had enough budget to edit two novels and one book cover. So I published Bears and Eagles, the first book in the series. It was well re ceived for a first effort by an unknown author. My original cover was eye-catching, but its retro art was not particularly suited to my theme. That is when I discovered Reedsy and the services they provided. I chose Dane Low to be my cover artist. Not only was he easy to work with, but I thought his addition of a battle scene into the background of the design was masterful. He is my choice as cover artist for the rest of the series. The original editor I had hired did a good job, but there were mistakes. So I again looked to Reedsy for help. I am a guy. I write for guys, but I have many powerful female characters in my novels, and I made the decision to find a female editor to work with. Kate O’Donnell and I came to an agreement for an editorial assessment of Eagles Claw and right away we had a connection. I take most of what she wants me to do to heart. Although we speak the same language, we have different cultures and usages of language that have to be ironed out at times. S he is Australian, I’m not, and my target market is North American males; but we are able to compromise, both of us being a little quirky and offbeat in our own ways. She was my sole choice for Eagles Talon, the third release of the series. She performed the whole editing process for me and did fantastic work. My work is now being noticed, even though I only first published last June. Kobo has recently asked me to participate in a pilot project they are putting together that may see my hard copies distributed with the Indigo chain. Kate is about to do an editorial assessment of the fifth novel in the series, and I am about to begin rewrites on book four, for which she did everything - from an editorial assessment to a full and substantial copy edit.I have expanded my distribution beyond Amazon and Kobo and have found that other sales channels, for me, sell as well or better than Amazon.  My Reedsy experience has been fantastic. Soon I will be searching for a marketing profess ional to join my team and will be looking to Reedsy once again. My journey continues. You can check out R.P. Wollbaum's Bears and Eagles series on Amazon here.  As always, feel free to leave any questions for R.P. Wollbaum in the comments below. And if you're ready to follow his example and looking for an editor, designer, or marketer, take a look at Reedsy here!
